The Process Project: Explorations in Abstraction

Join Michigan artist Valerie Allen for two days using the power of process to create paintings in acrylics. As a Certified Working Artist for Golden Paints, Val will bring an array of acrylic products including colors, gels, pastes, and mediums for you to use. This is a great way to become familiar with the versatility of acrylic products and increase confidence to add new items to your toolbox of art materials. 

Working on 12”x12” canvas panels provided for you, Val will motivate you with demos and discussions on developing your visual language through intuitive mark-making, telling your authentic story with art, and cultivating a spirit of adventure with each painting. Three projects will be completed during the workshop simultaneously within an agenda planned to allow for drying time of the thicker applications of gels and pastes. The timeline is fast-moving with opportunity for question-and-answer sessions each day. 

An easy to find supply list will be provided upon registration. All paints, gels and panels will be provided.

Here are some of the topics we will cover during our two days together. 

• Introduction of underpainting colors as interesting foundations for your paintings. 

• Learn how to get in the flow with a dedicated sketching practice.

• Segments on abstract painters through history who will provide inspiration. 

• Compositional solutions will be discussed that will evolve into 12"x12" paintings.

• Working on paper, a grid painting will result in 8 mini-paintings. 

• We will discuss the benefits of using a limited palette.

• Demonstrations on crackle paste, glass bead gel, and gel printing will be presented. 

• During lunch the art conversation will continue as we dine together. 

The expectation is that you will create three 12"x12" abstract paintings during the two days as well as have access to many acrylic products.

Beginner thru advanced artists are invited.

Workshop runs: 10-4 each day (students bring lunch and we dine together is keep our discussion going.)
